Macau to be a key regional development component: Secretary Tam PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 06 March 2008
Secretary for Economy and Finance, Francis Tam Pak Yuen, said during the Beijing congress yesterday that Macau would become a major component of the regional economic co-operation with Guangdong province and Hong Kong.
During the third day of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Mr Tam told the reporters Chief Executive Edmund Ho Hau Wah met with Secretary of the Guangdong Provincial Committee, Wang Yang and governor, Huang Huahua on Tuesday in which they exchanged opinions on how to further develop the regional co-operation.
Mr Tam said he agreed with the Guangdong-government-led co-operation and the Macau SAR government would give its full support in order to boost the economic tie between the two delta regions.
The economy and finance secretary also said that enhancing the regional economic co-operation had always been one of the development approaches of the SAR government, and Macau always encouraged the promotion of "passenger flow, logistics as well as capital flow".
"Macau will become a key component of the regional development and we don't need to worry that the city will be marginalised," Mr Tam said.
He added that any ideas to strengthen the co-operation, which all worth researching, could be studied and optimised with the other two governments.
As a foreign gaming company had expressed interest in developing a "sky casino" inside the A380 aircraft in order to attract Macau gamblers, Mr Tam said such kind of activity would not be allowed inside the SAR border if the laws defined it as illegitimate.
