Wednesday, 13 August 2008

Her Royal Highness, the Princess Royal, acting as Britain's International Olympic Committee delegate and President of the British Olympic Association, yesterday made her maiden tour to Macau to visit her country's athletes.
During the morning, Princess Anne took her first visit to Macau with the aim of visiting the British athletes who had been training and acclimatising in Macau for the past three weeks.
During the tour yesterday, the Princess Royal visited the Macau Stadium in Taipa, wherein she said that she appreciated the SAR government generously allowing the use of their excellent sports facilities for training of the GB (Great Britain) Team.
She was also impressed by the facilities in Macau after touring with Alex Vong, president of the Sports Development Board (IDM).
Accompanied by her husband, Admiral Tim Laurence, she was greeted at the ferry terminal by Dr Stanley Ho and British Honorary Consul, Dr Glenn McCartney.
The Princess Royal then proceeded to the Westin Hotel where she was met by Macau Olympic Committee dignitaries and was shown the recreational and dining facilities for athletes run by the British Olympic Association.
She then attended a reception at the Westin hosted by the British Consul-General for Hong Kong and Macau, Andrew Seaton, at which Macau Sports Minister Fernando Chui Sai-On represented the Macau Government.
Mr Seaton said that the fact that the British Olympic Association chose to locate their training camp in Macau, and the high level visits that have resulted, show how close ties between the United Kingdom and Macau have become.
He added that in the last week they have seen the first visits to Macau by both a member of the British Royal Family, Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, as well as a British Minister (Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe).
“Team GB have been delighted with the facilities and hospitality they have enjoyed here. The people of Macau can share in the success they achieve in Beijing," he continued.
