Two Malaysian women have been arrested in Hong Kong for selling fake luxury items on Internet auction sites, a customs spokesman in Hong Kong said yesterday. The two woman, aged 32 and 34 and described as tourists, were accused of using a personal blog to promote the counterfeit jewellery, leather goods and clothes accessories before selling them online, the spokesman said in a statement. Police seized around 1,200 items of fake goods from top European brands, the statement added. The goods were worth around 40,00 Hong Kong dollars (5,100 US). The case is the first time that tourists have used the Internet to promote their goods to customers across Southeast Asia and then sold them on auction sites, the statement added. Fake goods ranging from handbags to DVDs are readily available in China and Hong Kong, although police here have tried to clamp down on the illegal activity in recent years. |
